Ian has been so unbelievably patient and kind during my musical journey. I love how helpful his feedback is. Guitar lessons with Ian are always a pleasant time and the highlight of my week. He has helped me improve so much this year and last. Because of Ian, I am now a better player and understand music.” - Maddie P.

Who are my lessons for?

I offer lessons to beginning, intermediate, and advanced players alike. You may be new to playing an instrument or dusting off your instrument after years away from it. You may be an accomplished musician wishing to explore a different style or a new instrument altogether. I meet every student where they are and hand-tailor the curriculum to suit their needs.

Age is truly just a number in my studio. I have students in private and group lessons aged 3 to 92. In July 2023, I received my 1st teacher training to run SECE (Suzuki Early Childhood Education) classes in my studio, aptly named “Wildflower Babies.” Click Here to learn about those classes, or keep scrolling to learn more about private lessons for kids and adults.

Ian is a very knowledgeable and talented music teacher. He shares his gift through lessons which are fun and challenging. My fiddle playing has improved so much and it is enjoyable to me again. Ian has an easy going nature and teaches in a relaxed atmosphere. He is teaching me exactly the kind of music I want to play which is Western Swing, just one of his specialties. I look forward to practicing and implementing the techniques he has taught me to become a better fiddle player using the videos we make at my lessons and the lesson notes he sends me.

Lessons for Kids

Enrolling your child in music lessons at any age can be an incredible gift and life-changing experience for you and your child. The benefits of a child learning to play an instrument cannot be overstated. In an episode of the Huberman Lab Podcast, Dr. Andrew Huberman (neuroscientist and professor at Stanford University) states that there are "dozens if not hundreds" of peer-reviewed studies showing that when children learn to play an instrument (or better, multiple instruments and how to sing), it leads to greatly enhanced connectivity in the brain that persists into adulthood, and it facilitates other forms of neuroplasticity and learning. He goes on to say that children who learn these musical skills as well as singing, especially in an "improvised manner," have upwards of 30% greater connectivity between the two hemispheres of the brain. This enhanced connectivity is a long-term benefit, and learning music in this capacity is a gateway to neuroplasticity, providing a lifetime of cognitive and developmental advantages.

We are so pleased to have found Ian. He is so kind with our daughters and the results are already showing up. Our girls have so much pride in the skills they’ve acquired.

We can’t recommend Ian enough. He’s kind, patient and focused on their growth unlike any coach or mentor we’ve seen.

Lessons for Adults

It’s never too late to learn to play an instrument! Take it from my fiddle student Ed, who is 92, he works with me on Zoom and started playing just 5 years ago. He now plays in a local band and his bandmates often note his improvements as he practices, takes lessons, and improves.

I am an old man and a slow learner, I wanted to learn to play the fiddle, not the violin.
Ian has the patience of Job and listens to what I need to learn, then we go about to learn it.  I have actually made good progress. I feel like a real student, not a
number. I think I am as special to him as he is to me.

The joy of learning to play an instrument can’t be overstated. It is a challenge that will enrich your life and those around you for years to come. Don’t hesitate! Click HERE to get started today.

 FAQs

  • Sometimes children are not drawn to a specific instrument initially, this is okay! You can still want them to have a musical education and not know. My recommendation for everyone is to start with the violin, this was my experience. Teaching multi-instrumentalism is one of my specialties, and I believe that the violin is an incredibly strong foundation to build upon.

  • Yes, I do work with people who have no musical experience. I love working with students of all ages and levels. You can absolutely learn to play an instrument! it's a long-term commitment and a lot of work, but it is a blast.

  • I teach violin/fiddle, guitar, banjo, and mandolin and my business partner teaches piano, between the two of us we cover a lot of ground.

  • There is no difference, they are two names for the same instrument. Often violin might be used in a classical context, while fiddle would be used in the context of traditional music. I use both interchangeably.

  • I can start them as young as you want. My Early Childhood Education Class is for kids 0-4 and I can begin instrumental lessons at age 3 depending on the child.

  • Reach out to me on my contact page and I'll be happy to shoot over my studio policies and prices.
